- DESCRIPTION
-
- The printer is a new member of the Proprinter family and attaches to
- the IBM Personal Computers, to many compatible non-IBM personal
- computers, and to several IBM display stations. The printer offers
- two software or operator-selectable burst print speeds of 67-80 cps
- (Letter Quality) and 200-240 cps (Draft mode). Speed is dependent on
- the selected print mode and pitch. Both Draft and Letter Quality may
- be enhanced by double strike printing. Graphics and text modes may
- be alternately used in the same document.
-
- The IBM Proprinter X24 offers one-button selection of quality, pitch,
- font, and quiet mode. In addition the operator may use the printer
- Setup mode to select emphasized, double-high, double-wide, slashed
- zeroes, and reset the printer. The operator may also use the
- operator panel to print the status of the setup mode controllable
- options.
-
- The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 ribbon is a black fabric ribbon in a
- "clean hands" cartridge for easy installation. The ribbon is not the
- same as the ribbon used on the 9-wire Proprinters (4201 and 4202). A
- modified cartridge design prevents the installation of the 9-wire
- Proprinters' ribbons on the IBM Proprinter X24.
-
- o This printer has four type families resident in the printer. Each
- type family is a group of typefaces that share a basic design, but
- vary in boldness and type size. Over 50 resident typefaces are
- available.
-
- o FontSet option that will allow user selected optional typefaces to
- be placed in non-volatile memory.
-
- The IBM Proprinter X24 allows the user to choose among manually-fed
- cut sheets, continuous forms, or using the sheetfeed,
- automatically-fed cut sheets. Continuous forms must be removed, when
- the sheetfeed is in use.
-
- The printer attaches to the IBM Personal Computer via an IBM PC
- Printer attach cable. Attachment to other than the IBM Personal
- Computer may require a different cable.
-
- A sheetfeed is offered for the printer. This option permits
- convenient, automatic loading of cut sheets or letterhead with no
- additional software.
-
- An optional FontSet is available.
-
- This option will contain customer setup hardware, diskettes and a
- Guide to Operations for downloading up to 11 additional type
- families. Each downloaded type family can be modified at the
- operator panel to print in several type faces. Also, this option
- allows the Printer to retain the downloaded font and operator panel
- settings in memory even when the printer has been turned off. This
- option will be offered as follows:
-
- 1. P/N 94X6120: FontSet Option (Diskettes, module, manual, module
- removal tool)
-
- 2. P/N 94X6121: FontSet diskettes, manual
-
- FONT DOWNLOAD FEATURE DISKETTES
-
- Each diskette (or diskettes) will contain the download utility and up
- to 11 font data files. All diskettes will be double sided, available
- in 5.25 inch and 3.5 inch diskettes and will support DOS levels 2.0
- and higher.
-
- The FontSet option offers the following fonts:
-

-
- Specified Operating Environment
-
- Hardware Requirements: The IBM PC Parallel Printer Cable (P/N
- 1525612) is required for the IBM Proprinter X24 and must be ordered
- separately. If serial connection is required, the Asynchronous
- serial attach module (P/N 6493187) and the Serial attach cable (P/N
- 8509386) are required.
-
- Software Requirements: The IBM Proprinter X24 has been designed to
- be compatible with the IBM Proprinter and the IBM Proprinter XL. In
- general, software applications which operate with these previously
- announced printers, will also operate with the IBM Proprinter X24.
- However, applications may not take advantage of all the new
- capabilities such as resident type families, high-resolution graphics
- or the sheetfeed. The printer will emulate the Epson LQ-800 for high
- resolution graphics; Most existing software that supports Epson
- 24-wire printing will work with the IBM Proprinter X24. For specific
- information regarding software compatibility refer to the current
- Printer Software Compatibility Guide.
-
- Differences from the Proprinter include the following:
-
- o The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 supports a unique download font data
- stream with letter quality resolution into a non-volatile plugable
- module. As a consequence, the IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 data stream
- for download is different than that of the Proprinter.
-
- o The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 font and print quality select command
- offers additional font selection and print quality modes above
- that of the Proprinter. The parameter values used in this command
- are different between the two printers. See the IBM 4207
- Proprinter X24 Guide to Operations for details.
-
- The above list of differences in not exhaustive.
-
- Compatibility: All commands supported by the IBM Proprinter and
- Proprinter XL are available on the IBM Proprinter X24. The IBM
- Proprinter X24 offers a number of enhancements to the IBM Proprinter.
-
- - Letter quality printing
-
- - 24 Wire graphics support
-
- - Quieter when printing
-
- - Additional type font styles & pitches
-
- - Additional paper handling capability
-
- - User indication of current pitch
-
- - User indication of quiet mode
-
- NON-IBM HOST COMPATIBILITY: The IBM Proprinter X24 attaches to the
- following non-IBM PCs via the parallel interface as indicated and the
- appropriate attachment cable (customer purchase and set-up).
-
- These non-IBM personal computers have been tested with the IBM
- Proprinter X24 by IBM with the following results.

- *The compatibility information presented is intended to give general
- guidelines for the attachment of the IBM Proprinter X24 to selected
- non-IBM computer systems.
-
- The IBM Proprinter X24 implements IBM's version of the parallel
- interface or RS-232 serial interface. IBM has performed limited
- tests of the IBM Proprinter X24 and the non-IBM computer systems
- using the appropriate cables and DOS print facilities. There were no
- problems noted attributable to interface differences.
-
- The only way to ensure satisfactory results is for the user to test
- the specific printer, computer, and software combination against
- desired results.

-
- The IBM Proprinter XL24 offers one-button selection of quality,
- pitch, font, and quiet mode. In addition the operator may use the
- printer Setup mode to select emphasized, double-high, double-wide,
- slashed zeroes, and reset the printer. The operator may also use the
- operator panel to print the status of the setup mode controllable
- options.
-
- The IBM Proprinter XL24 ribbon is a black fabric ribbon in a "clean
- hands" cartridge for easy installation. The ribbon is not the same
- as the ribbon used on the 9-wire Proprinters (4201 and 4202). A
- modified cartridge design prevents the installation of the 9-wire
- Proprinters' ribbons on the IBM Proprinter XL24.
-
- o This printer has four type families resident in the printer. Each
- type family is a group of typefaces that share a basic design, but
- vary in boldness and type size. Over 50 resident typefaces are
- available.
-
- o FontSet option that will allow user selected optional typefaces to
- be placed in non-volatile memory.
-
- The printer attaches to the IBM Personal Computer via an IBM PC
- Printer attach cable. Attachment to other than the IBM Personal
- Computer may require a different cable.
-
- A sheetfeed is offered for the printer. This option permits
- convenient, automatic loading of cut sheets or letterhead with no
- additional software.
-
- An optional FontSet is available. This option will contain customer
- setup hardware, diskettes, and a Guide to Operations for downloading
- up to 11 additional type families. Each downloaded type family can

- DESCRIPTION
-
- The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer is a new member of the resistive
- ribbon family and attaches to the IBM Personal Computers and to
- non-IBM Personal Computers compatible with the IBM Personal Computer
- Parallel Interface. The Printer offers three software or operator
- selectable burst print speeds of 80-136 cps (enhanced mode), 100-171
- cps (quality mode), and 160-274 cps (draft mode) depending upon which
- print mode and pitch is selected. The quality mode provides engraved
- letter quality printing for external correspondence and whenever high
- quality printing is required. The enhanced mode is used to maintain
- high quality printing under special conditions such as low humidity
- or with textured papers. The high speed draft mode provides near
- letter quality printing and faster speeds for internal correspondence
- and utility applications. There are four fonts of various pitches
- embedded in the printer (Courier 10, 12, 17.1 and Boldface PS). To
- supplement this choice of type styles, there are optional IBM
- ELECTRONIC Font III cartridges and Download Font Features available.
- APA graphics support will enable the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer to
- print graphics output from the IBM Personal Computer. It will
- support the graphics commands that currently operate the IBM
- PROPRINTER and will operate with the addressability of the Proprinter
- (72X60, 72X120, 72X240 dots per inch vertical by horizontal). In
- addition, the three new addressing modes of the IBM QUIETWRITER
- Printer Model 2 (60X60, 120X120, 240X240) will be provided to allow
- high resolution printer graphics. Graphics and text modes may be
- alternately used in the same document.
-
- The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer supports 8 languages in the base
- machine. These languages are English, French, Italian, Spanish,
- Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, and German.
-

-
- Hardware Requirements: The IBM PC Printer Attach Cable (P/N 1525612)
- is required for the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer and must be ordered
- separately.
-
- Software Requirements: The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer has been
- designed to be compatible with the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2,
- and the IBM Proprinter. In general, software applications which
- operate with these previously announced printers, will also operate
- with the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer. However, some applications may
- not take advantage of all the new capabilities such as 8 on-line
- fonts, the Font Download Features, or the Dual Drawer Sheetfeed.
- Also this new printer will handle some commands and operations
- differently than the previous mentioned printers. Some of these
- differences are outlined below. For specific information regarding
- software compatibility refer to the Printer Software Compatibility
- Guide (Form No. G360-2652-00).
-
- Differences from the Proprinter include the following:
-
- 1. The 5202 supports a parallel interface. An internal serial
- interface option is not provided.
-
- 2. The 5202 does not support the overscore or double high character
- print. Characters will be printed but with no overscore and at
- normal height, respectively.
-
- 3. The 5202 supports a unique download font data stream with letter
- quality resolution into a non-volatile pluggable cartridge. As a
- consequence, the 5202 data stream for download is different than
- that of the Proprinter.
-
- 4. The 5202 font and print quality select command offers additional
- font selection and print quality modes above that of the
- Proprinter. The parameter values used in this command are
- different between the two printers. See the 5202 Guide to
- Operations for details.
-
- Differences from the QUIETWRITER 2 include the following:
-
- 1. The 5202 supports the compress print command by switching to 17
- pitch if the font emulation switch is off. If the font emulation
- switch is on, the command is ignored. This differs from the IBM
- QUIETWRITER Model 2, which switches to a 13.2 inch writing line
- with no pitch change.
-
- 2. The 5202 supports the 10 pitch print command by switching to 10
- pitch if the font emulation switch is off. If the font emulation
- switch is on, the command is ignored. This differs from the IBM
- QUIETWRITER Model 2, which switches to an 8 inch writing line with
- no pitch change.
-
- 3. The 5202 can switch between two font sets--one internal and one
- external, thereby simulating the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer Model 1
- and 2 font slot "A" and "*", respectively. See the 5202 Guide to
- Operations for details.
-
- 4. The font cartridges used by the two printers are different and not
- interchangeable.
-
- The above list of differences is not exhaustive. Reference should be
- made to the Printer Software Compatibility Guide for detail regarding
- support of specific software packages.
-
- DisplayWrite 3 and 4 Considerations
-
- It is recommended that customers owning Displaywrite 3 purchase the
- upgrade to Displaywrite 4 in order to facilitate use of the new
- capabilities of the 5202. Refer to the Program Availability letter
- dated October 21, 1986, number 286-491 for ordering details. This
- upgrade is offered for a limited time and will end on July 31, 1987.
-
- The following is a brief description of the limitations which
- exist when using DisplayWrite 3 and DisplayWrite 4 with the IBM
- QUIETWRITER III Printer. For additional detail on these
- limitations see the documentation provided with the Printer Driver
- Tables on the Printer Support Diskette included in the IBM
- Personal Printers Marketing Reference Guide.
-
- DisplayWrite 3 may be set up to operate with the IBM QUIETWRITER
- III Printers as a Class E or a Class F printer. Class E is the
- class used with the QUIETWRITER Printer Model 2.
-
- DisplayWrite 3 Version 1.1 Class E Limitations
-
- o Selection of print quality (draft, quality, enhanced) via control
- panel only
- o Drawer selection for two drawer sheetfeed and/or envelope option
- is manual only
- o Font switching is limited to changing from an internal font to the
- font in the corresponding position of the external cartridge.
- (Ex. Courier 12 internal to Prestige 12 external).
-
- DisplayWrite 3 Version 1.1 Class F Limitations
-
- o Symbol fonts are not supported.
- o Margins slightly off when changing pitch from 10, 12 or PSM to 15,
- 17.1 or double wide on any pitch.
-
- DisplayWrite 4 Limitations
-
- The following is a brief description of the limitations which exist
- when using DisplayWrite 4 with the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer.
-
- o Print quality selection for more than two print modes (draft,
- quality, enhanced) requires accessing an alternate DisplayWrite 4
- profile.
-
- o Switching fonts between external cartridges requires setting up a
- User-Defined Control to establish a printer stop code that would
- be used prior to each font switch between external cartridges.
-
- Diskettes containing the DisplayWrite Printer Tables and the
- detailed information on the limitations (with suggested
- workarounds) will be included in the IBM Personal Printers
- Marketing Reference Guide. In addition, the National Support
- Center will stock the diskettes in limited quantities to supply
- them to dealers who need a replacement because of a lost or
- damaged diskette.
-
- Compatibility: All commands supported by the IBM QUIETWRITER
- Printers Model 2 are available on the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer.
- The new IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer offers a number of enhancements
- to the IBM QUIETWRITER Printer.
-
- - Higher print speeds
- - Quieter when printing

- IBM PRINTER COMPATIBILITY WITH NON-IBM COMPUTER SYSTEMS
-
- The compatibility information presented below is intended to give
- general guidelines for the attachment of IBM printer to selected
- non-IBM computer systems.
-
- The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer implements IBM's version of the
- parallel interface. IBM has performed limited tests of the IBM
- QUIETWRITER III Printer and the non-IBM computer systems using the
- appropriate cables and DOS print facilities. There were no problems
- noted attributable to the interface differences.
-
- The only way to insure satisfactory results is for the end user to
- test the specific printer, computer and software combination against
- desired results.
-
- IBM MAKES NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT
- LIMITED TO, THE WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND THE IMPLIED WARRANTY
- OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WITH RESPECT TO THE COMPATIBILITY
- OF IBM PRINTERS AND NON-IBM COMPUTERS.

-
- Prerequisites: An adapter kit (P/N 1318362) must be ordered and
- installed on the QUIETWRITER III Printer in order to use the Single
- Drawer Sheetfeed Option (P/N 6373100).
-
- Limitations
-
- 1. See DisplayWrite 3 and 4 considerations in Software Requirements
- section.
-
- 2. Automatic Sheetfeeds:
-
- Optimum feeding results with automatic sheetfeeds will be obtained
- when using 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sq. metre) paper. Some 16 lb. (60
- gm/sq. metre) paper may be used with satisfactory results. Users
- must test 16 lb. (60 gm/sq. metre) paper in their particular
- environment to assure satisfactory operating results.
-
- 3. Paper Recommendations
-
- The 5202 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
- best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 Sheffield
- points (less the 9 BEKK second). Most 16-20 pound (60-75 GM/SQ.
- metre) xerographic papers meet this requirement. Enhanced mode is
- recommended for envelopes and textured papers.
-
- The IBM QUIET(R) III High Yield Printer Ribbon is sensitive to
- humidity and prints darker in high humidity and lighter in low
- humidity for a fixed setting of the print control. It therefore
- may be necessary to move the print control to a lower setting when
- the indoor humidity is high, and to a higher setting when the
- humidity is low. The ribbon is less sensitive to temperature
- variations.
-
- Listed below are only a few of many recommended papers:
-
- ARDOR XEROCOPY (Trademark of Nekoosa Papers Inc.)
- CHAMPION BOND (Trademark of Champion International
- Corporation)
- HAMMERMILL FORE XEROCOPY (Trademark of Hammermill Papers
- Group)
- IBM MULTI-SYSTEM PAPER
- MEAD INFO XEROGRAPHIC
- NEKOOSA BOND (Trademark of Nekoosa Papers Inc.)
- SPRINGHILL BUSINESS PAPER (Trademark of International Paper
- Co.)
-
- 4. Transparencies
-
- The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer may be used to print directly on
- transparencies. Print quality and durability depend on the
- transparency used. Therefore, transparencies should be tested for
- acceptability.
-
- Below are several considerations for printing on transparencies.
-
- o Transparencies produced for use with infrared copiers generally
- give acceptable results when printing is done on the front or
- non-infrared side. In general the front of the transparency is
- identified by placing the "notch" in the transparency in the
- upper right-hand corner or as recommended by the individual
- manufacturer.
- o A sheet of xerographic paper should be loaded behind each
- transparency.
- o Use the Quality print mode.
- o Information printed on the transparency is not indelible.
-
- Listed below are three transparencies which have been tested and
- accepted with the printer. However, since changes in the design
- or manufacture of these transparencies by the manufacturer cannot
- be anticipated by IBM, these transparencies should be tested for
- acceptable results with your application.
-
- o 3M, Scotch(TM) 7100, Transparency Film for Infrared Copiers,
- D.C./Part No. 021200-16819
- o 3M, 1301, Transparency Film for Overhead Projection, Infrared
- Transparency Film, Reorder Number 78-6969-5495-3
- o Labelon Corporation, TR-45, Projection Transparencies-Infrared,
- Order No. TR-45C.
-
- Scotch 7100 is a trademark of 3M
-
- 5. Usage Considerations -- Expected average annual usage is 6 million
- characters. Care should be exercised in placing the printer in
- usage environments exceeding 12 million characters a year due to
- supply cost considerations.
-
- 6. Minimum dot density is 2x2 when in 240 x 240 dots per inch APA
- graphics mode.
-
- Cable Orders: A PC Printer Attach Cable (P/N 1525612) must be
- ordered separately to attach the QUIETWRITER III Printer to the
- parallel interface of the Personal Computer.
-
- Packaging: The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer comes with a ribbon, a
- printhead, a dust shield, a Guide to Operation Manual and a power
- cord.
-
- Supplies: New supplies are announced to support the IBM QUIETWRITER
- III Printer.
-
- The following new supplies are available immediately:
-
- o IBM Quiet(R) III High Yield Ribbon (P/N 1299933)

- unique to the IBM "Quietwriter" III Printer. It will not work
- on any other IBM "Quietwriter" Printer, typewriter or typing
- systems.
