  75.  DESCRIPTION
  76.  
  77.  The printer is a new member of the Proprinter family and attaches to
  78.  the IBM Personal Computers, to many compatible non-IBM personal
  79.  computers, and to several IBM display stations.  The printer offers
  80.  two software or operator-selectable burst print speeds of 67-80 cps
  81.  (Letter Quality) and 200-240 cps (Draft mode).  Speed is dependent on
  82.  the selected print mode and pitch.  Both Draft and Letter Quality may
  83.  be enhanced by double strike printing.  Graphics and text modes may
  84.  be alternately used in the same document.
  85.  
  86.  The IBM Proprinter X24 offers one-button selection of quality, pitch,
  87.  font, and quiet mode.    In addition the operator may use the printer
  88.  Setup mode to select emphasized, double-high, double-wide, slashed
  89.  zeroes, and reset the printer.  The operator may also use the
  90.  operator panel to print the status of the setup mode controllable
  91.  options.

  93.  The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 ribbon is a black fabric ribbon in a
  94.  "clean hands" cartridge for easy installation.  The ribbon is not the
  95.  same as the ribbon used on the 9-wire Proprinters (4201 and 4202).  A
  96.  modified cartridge design prevents the installation of the 9-wire
  97.  Proprinters' ribbons on the IBM Proprinter X24.
  98.  
  99.  o  This printer has four type families resident in the printer.  Each
  100.     type family is a group of typefaces that share a basic design, but
  101.     vary in boldness and type size.  Over 50 resident typefaces are
  102.     available.
  103.  
  104.  o  FontSet option that will allow user selected optional typefaces to
  105.     be placed in non-volatile memory.
  106.  
  107.  The IBM Proprinter X24 allows the user to choose among manually-fed
  108.  cut sheets, continuous forms, or using the sheetfeed,
  109.  automatically-fed cut sheets.    Continuous forms must be removed, when
  110.  the sheetfeed is in use.

  112.  The printer attaches to the IBM Personal Computer via an IBM PC
  113.  Printer attach cable.    Attachment to other than the IBM Personal
  114.  Computer may require a different cable.
  115.  
  116.  A sheetfeed is offered for the printer.  This option permits
  117.  convenient, automatic loading of cut sheets or letterhead with no
  118.  additional software.

  120.  An optional FontSet is available.
  121.  
  122.  This option will contain customer setup hardware, diskettes and a
  123.  Guide to Operations for downloading up to 11 additional type
  124.  families.  Each downloaded type family can be modified at the
  125.  operator panel to print in several type faces.  Also, this option
  126.  allows the Printer to retain the downloaded font and operator panel
  127.  settings in memory even when the printer has been turned off.    This
  128.  option will be offered as follows:

  426.  Specified Operating Environment
  427.  
  428.  Hardware Requirements:  The IBM PC Parallel Printer Cable (P/N
  429.  1525612) is required for the IBM Proprinter X24 and must be ordered
  430.  separately.  If serial connection is required, the Asynchronous
  431.  serial attach module (P/N 6493187) and the Serial attach cable (P/N
  432.  8509386) are required.
  433.  
  434.  Software Requirements:  The IBM Proprinter X24 has been designed to
  435.  be compatible with the IBM Proprinter and the IBM Proprinter XL.  In
  436.  general, software applications which operate with these previously
  437.  announced printers, will also operate with the IBM Proprinter X24.
  438.  However, applications may not take advantage of all the new
  439.  capabilities such as resident type families, high-resolution graphics
  440.  or the sheetfeed.  The printer will emulate the Epson LQ-800 for high
  441.  resolution graphics;  Most existing software that supports Epson
  442.  24-wire printing will work with the IBM Proprinter X24.  For specific
  443.  information regarding software compatibility refer to the current
  444.  Printer Software Compatibility Guide.

  446.  Differences from the Proprinter include the following:
  447.  
  448.  o  The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 supports a unique download font data
  449.     stream with letter quality resolution into a non-volatile plugable
  450.     module.  As a consequence, the IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 data stream
  451.     for download is different than that of the Proprinter.
  452.  
  453.  o  The IBM 4207 Proprinter X24 font and print quality select command
  454.     offers additional font selection and print quality modes above
  455.     that of the Proprinter.  The parameter values used in this command
  456.     are different between the two printers.  See the IBM 4207
  457.     Proprinter X24 Guide to Operations for details.

  509.  guidelines for the attachment of the IBM Proprinter X24 to selected
  510.  non-IBM computer systems.

  512.  The IBM Proprinter X24 implements IBM's version of the parallel
  513.  interface or RS-232 serial interface.    IBM has performed limited
  514.  tests of the IBM Proprinter X24 and the non-IBM computer systems
  515.  using the appropriate cables and DOS print facilities.  There were no
  516.  problems noted attributable to interface differences.
  517.  
  518.  The only way to ensure satisfactory results is for the user to test
  519.  the specific printer, computer, and software combination against
  520.  desired results.

  727.  The printer is a new member of the Proprinter family and attaches to
  728.  the IBM Personal Computers, to many compatible non-IBM personal
  729.  computers, and to several IBM display stations.  The printer offers
  730.  two software or operator-selectable burst print speeds of 67-80 cps
  731.  (Letter Quality) and 200-240 cps (Draft mode).  Speed is dependent on
  732.  the selected print mode and pitch.  Both Draft and Letter Quality may
  733.  be enhanced by double strike printing.  Graphics and text modes may
  734.  be alternately used in the same document.
  735.  
  736.  The IBM Proprinter XL24 offers one-button selection of quality,
  737.  pitch, font, and quiet mode.  In addition the operator may use the
  738.  printer Setup mode to select emphasized, double-high, double-wide,
  739.  slashed zeroes, and reset the printer.  The operator may also use the
  740.  operator panel to print the status of the setup mode controllable
  741.  options.

  743.  The IBM Proprinter XL24 ribbon is a black fabric ribbon in a "clean
  744.  hands" cartridge for easy installation.  The ribbon is not the same
  745.  as the ribbon used on the 9-wire Proprinters (4201 and 4202).    A
  746.  modified cartridge design prevents the installation of the 9-wire
  747.  Proprinters' ribbons on the IBM Proprinter XL24.

  749.  o  This printer has four type families resident in the printer.  Each
  750.     type family is a group of typefaces that share a basic design, but
  751.     vary in boldness and type size.  Over 50 resident typefaces are
  752.     available.
  753.  
  754.  o  FontSet option that will allow user selected optional typefaces to
  755.     be placed in non-volatile memory.
  756.  
  757.  The printer attaches to the IBM Personal Computer via an IBM PC
  758.  Printer attach cable.    Attachment to other than the IBM Personal
  759.  Computer may require a different cable.

  761.  A sheetfeed is offered for the printer.  This option permits
  762.  convenient, automatic loading of cut sheets or letterhead with no
  763.  additional software.

  1325.  The IBM Proprinter II is a new member of the Proprinter family and
  1326.  attaches to IBM Personal Computers, to compatible non-IBM personal
  1327.  computers, and to certain displays.  The Proprinter II is an enhanced
  1328.  replacement for the Proprinter.

  1330.  The printer offers three software or operator selectable burst print
  1331.  speeds of 40 cps  (Near Letter Quality), 120 cps
  1332.  (Emphasized-Fastfont) and 240 cps  (DP mode-Fastfont).  Speed is
  1333.  dependent on the selected print mode and pitch.  Graphics and text
  1334.  modes may be alternately used in the same document.

  1336.  The IBM Proprinter II offers one-button selection of quality and
  1337.  quiet mode.  In addition, the operator may use the printer setup mode
  1338.  to select double high printing, double wide printing, 12 or 10 cpi,
  1339.  condensed print, emphasized print, NLQ II font, or printer reset to
  1340.  initial defaults.

  1342.  The printer attaches to the IBM Personal Computer via the IBM PC

  1827.  The IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer is a new member of the resistive
  1828.  ribbon family and attaches to the IBM Personal Computers and to
  1829.  non-IBM Personal Computers compatible with the IBM Personal Computer
  1830.  Parallel Interface.  The Printer offers three software or operator
  1831.  selectable burst print speeds of 80-136 cps (enhanced mode), 100-171
  1832.  cps (quality mode), and 160-274 cps (draft mode) depending upon which
  1833.  print mode and pitch is selected.  The quality mode provides engraved
  1834.  letter quality printing for external correspondence and whenever high
  1835.  quality printing is required.    The enhanced mode is used to maintain
  1836.  high quality printing under special conditions such as low humidity
  1837.  or with textured papers.  The high speed draft mode provides near
  1838.  letter quality printing and faster speeds for internal correspondence
  1839.  and utility applications.  There are four fonts of various pitches
  1840.  embedded in the printer (Courier 10, 12, 17.1 and Boldface PS).  To
  1841.  supplement this choice of type styles, there are optional IBM
  1842.  ELECTRONIC Font III cartridges and Download Font Features available.
  1843.  APA graphics support will enable the IBM QUIETWRITER III Printer to
  1844.  print graphics output from the IBM Personal Computer.    It will
  1845.  support the graphics commands that currently operate the IBM
  1846.  PROPRINTER and will operate with the addressability of the Proprinter

  2111.     interface option is not provided.

  2113.  2. The 5202 does not support the overscore or double high character
  2114.     print.  Characters will be printed but with no overscore and at
  2115.     normal height, respectively.

  2117.  3. The 5202 supports a unique download font data stream with letter
  2118.     quality resolution into a non-volatile pluggable cartridge.  As a
  2119.     consequence, the 5202 data stream for download is different than
  2120.     that of the Proprinter.

  2122.  4. The 5202 font and print quality select command offers additional
  2123.     font selection and print quality modes above that of the
  2124.     Proprinter.  The parameter values used in this command are

  2297.     The 5202 prints with a non-impact printing process which works
  2298.     best on smooth papers with a maximum roughness of 300 Sheffield
  2299.     points (less the 9 BEKK second).  Most 16-20 pound (60-75 GM/SQ.
  2300.     metre) xerographic papers meet this requirement.  Enhanced mode is
  2301.     recommended for envelopes and textured papers.

  2303.     The IBM QUIET(R) III High Yield Printer Ribbon is sensitive to
  2304.     humidity and prints darker in high humidity and lighter in low
  2305.     humidity for a fixed setting of the print control.    It therefore
  2306.     may be necessary to move the print control to a lower setting when
  2307.     the indoor humidity is high, and to a higher setting when the
  2308.     humidity is low.  The ribbon is less sensitive to temperature
  2309.     variations.

  2328.     transparency used.    Therefore, transparencies should be tested for

  2331.     Below are several considerations for printing on transparencies.

  2333.     o  Transparencies produced for use with infrared copiers generally
  2334.        give acceptable results when printing is done on the front or
